Which kind of game are you playing?
| Setting | Deckbuilding baseline | MBC exceptions |
|---|---|---|
| Constructed Commander | Usually 100 cards including commander, singleton except basic lands | Apply only the exceptions your card explicitly grants |
| Mystery Booster Commander Draft | Draft a card pool and build a 60-card deck | Use the event’s partner and color-choice rules |
| A table’s agreed variant | Agree on the changes before playing | An agreement does not change Constructed legality |
MBC Draft uses three boosters, two cards per pick, and passing left, right, then left. It has special provisions for eligible commanders with one or fewer colors, including an emblem option described in the official guide. Do not transfer that Draft permission to a Constructed deck.

Published legality dates

Planned CR changes announced.
- Commander eligibility
New-to-Magic MBC cards.
- Eternal eligibility
New-to-Magic MBC cards.
The legality dates do not include acorn or playtest cards. See the format distinctions.
New-to-Magic MBC cards become Commander legal on November 13, 2026, and legal in Legacy, Vintage and other Eternal formats on January 1, 2027. Existing reprints retain their own applicable format legality. Opening a card early does not change those dates.
Acorn-stamped and playtest cards are not legal in Constructed formats. They are playable in the MBC Limited experience described by Wizards. For a casual exception, discuss it with the table first.

A date check before an event
Check the event’s format, the card’s exact name and version, and the current banned and restricted list. A release date and a ban decision are separate checks. Rulebreaker is a deckbuilding ability; it is not a general permission to include otherwise excluded cards.
