Double-faced cards and the meld change

The functional exception

The October bulletin announces a separate rule 713 for meld. Under that announced change, meld cards will leave the double-faced-card category, affecting cards such as Overgrown Pest. Check the effective Comprehensive Rules before applying it in a game. Wizards describes the rest of the reorganization as organizational.

Overgrown Pest explicitly looks for a double-faced card among its options. That is why the meld category matters to this example. The card image illustrates the effect; use the effective rules to settle a particular interaction.

A useful review

Search your deck for effects that explicitly mention double-faced cards. If the intended interaction uses a meld card, read the current rule and Oracle text together. Moving a rule to another number does not, by itself, establish a new interaction.

For a rules discussion, bring both the effect that identifies the card and the card you expect it to find. Ask whether the question depends on the card’s category or on a separate characteristic. This is a suggested way to frame the question, not a ruling about every meld interaction.
